Christmas in Dubai

As I am on reserve this month, I wasn’t sure where I would be spending Christmas day this year but I was so happy when my roster changed to ‘day off’ the night before. As it was pretty late notice, we hadn’t prepared anything so on Christmas Eve, we nipped to Spinneys Supermarket to get some Christmas food. There wasn’t the best selection but we made do!

I’ve never actually spent Christmas in Dubai so I was excited to do so, especially with Mamdouh for our first Christmas as a married couple! In 2018, I was in Paris and last year, I was back home in England so I was looking forward to somewhere new. Christmas tree’s are so expensive over here in Dubai so we opted for a small 4 foot tree and some simple silver decorations from Daiso (Japanese discount store). On Christmas morning, we opened our cards and gifts and then had breakfast.

We had a lazy day watching the Christmas Chronicles and listening to Christmas music. I put on a bit of make up and a red lip which I haven’t done since before lock down – I miss wearing the red lipstick every day to work!

For our starters, we had a prawn cocktail platter and for lunch we went for roast duck as the supermarket didn’t have any turkey’s left. We had the duck with roast potatoes, carrots, Brussels sprouts, Yorkshire puddings and gravy. I haven’t had a roast dinner since last Christmas so it was a lovely treat. We also treated ourselves to a bottle of non alcoholic wine (grape juice!!). I wasn’t too keen on the roast Duck, but Mamdouh loved it. To finish, we had profiteroles drizzled in chocolate and salted caramel sauce – delicious.

To end our evening, we watched another couple of movies and then had some hot chocolate with whipped cream on top. It was such a lovely day and I am so glad I got to spend it with Mamdouh. Of course, I would have preferred to have spent it with my family also, but I will be going home in January so I am really looking forward to that.

I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas, despite the circumstances and wishing everyone a fabulous New Year. Bring on 2021!

Thanks for reading.
