Eid Mubarak 2020 In Dubai

A huge Eid Mubarak to everyone who is celebrating! As you may have seen in my previous posts, this was my first ever Ramadan so I feel overjoyed to be celebrating this year after fasting for a month. I cannot believe how quickly the time went and I’m surprised how much I got used to it. Today was the first day of Eid, and it felt really strange being able to eat and drink whenever I wanted! I was really looking forward to the Eid celebrations but unfortunately this year, as expected, things in Dubai were much more muted.

We decided to go out for a sunset walk to celebrate as there was nothing much else on and it was too hot to do anything in the day time. We went to Dubai Marina which is one of my favourite areas in Dubai and it reminds me so much of being on holiday. Just before we left, there was a sandstorm, but luckily, as we were driving, it started to clear up.

This was the first time, in over two months, that I have put makeup on, done my hair and put on a nice dress! It felt lovely to get a little bit dressed up, although I must say, the mask kind of ruined the whole look! It felt amazing going outside and I was excited to see what the Marina was like. We parked up, and walked right the way around it.

I was really surprised to see Dubai Marina looking relatively normal. There were people renting yachts, families playing, cyclists and lots of people walking. It felt just like usual, but of course everyone was wearing masks and social distancing. We walked for around an hour, watching as the sun went down.

There is actually a 3,000 AED (£670/$816) fine if you are caught without a mask so we made sure we were wearing our masks at all times, except for a quick picture here and there! Here in Dubai, we also still have a curfew from 8pm – 6am, so as it was nearly 7pm by now, we didn’t have much longer before we had to make our way back home.

Feeling very hot and bothered at this point, we went into Dubai Marina Mall to cool down with some AC, and then we ended up picking up a burrito from Tortilla in the Food Court.

The Malls in Dubai have now all reopened, but there are strict rules that apply. Most of the stores check your temperature before entering and there are restrictions on what you can touch/try on. In clothing shops, you are only allowed to try on a maximum of 5 items as the clothes are put into ‘quarantine’ after each customer has tried them on. Shops such as Sephora and pharmacies have plastic covers over all of their products and you are not allowed to touch anything – if you want to buy something, you must ask a staff member to pick it up for you.

Due to the 8pm curfew, all the stores and restaurants close at 7pm to allow you and the staff to get home on time. Although we had a lovely sunset stroll around the Marina, I was a little disappointed as I had such high expectations for Eid and really wanted to celebrate in a special way. There were not any decorations, and there was no atmosphere at all. It is such a shame and quite sad as I remember Eid being such a huge celebration in Dubai.

That being said, I am so glad I took part in Ramadan this year! Also, an update on my weight, I started Ramadan weighing 11.1 stone and finished with an extra 3 pounds, weighing in at 11.4! I totally wasn’t expecting to gain weight but luckily it is not much of a drastic change. At least now we can get out and about and do some more exercise!

Eid Mubarak!

Thanks for reading.

  2. Always so interesting. Can see why you love Dubai Marina so much as we have many, many fond memories there. One of the funniest was the Dubai Marina Yacht Club “Can I help you Madam?”
“Nah your alright!!” We got exactly what we wanted – to experience the breathtaking view and toilet roll!!
Lovely pics and, as Mamdouh says, love love love the redesign. Is that your actual writing? xxxxx
