Howdy! Another trip to Texas and this time with Mamdouh. We were both rostered Houston flights a day apart, but we luckily managed to rejig our rosters and swap onto the same flight! 16 hours later, we landed into Houston and made our way to the hotel.

I really wanted to go to this Country/Western line dancing bar not too far from the hotel so we got ourselves ready and then got an Uber there. We had dinner first and then went to ‘Wild West’.

We sat in the bar with a drink and watched everyone dance along to country songs. It had such a nice atmosphere and I was fascinated watching everyone. I could have stayed there for hours, but as we were exhausted, we decided to call it a night after an hour.

The next morning, we had a full day planned so we woke up, had breakfast in the hotel and then decided to rent a car so we could get around easier. Our first stop of the day was shooting at Top Gun. I did this before last time I was in Houston, but I wanted to take Mamdouh this time. I didn’t particularly enjoy it last time, but it was something he wanted to do so I thought I’d give it a go. Just as I remember, it was terrifying!

We then drove to the Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park which was really impressive.

We then drove to Downtown Houston and spotted some art murals where we took a few pictures. We wanted to go for lunch in a traditional Texas BBQ place, but because of a huge water pipe leak in the city, lots of places were out of water and had closed. We found one place open in the Houston Centre so got some lunch there.

After a late lunch, we drove to Funplex which is a huge indoor amusement park and actually where Beyonce filmed the ‘Blow’ music video – one of my favourite songs and videos! I completely forgot to take a picture of the roller skating disco though!! We didn’t stay that long as it felt a little bit old and run down!

As we were driving around, I spotted an Ulta Beauty and had a look in there. I have been dying to try Kylie Cosmetics/Kylie Skin so I was very excited and ending up buying quite a few bits – oops. After that, we walked around CityCentre which is a lovely shopping and entertainment area in Memorial City.

Our final stop was some dinner just behind the hotel in a little Italian restaurant. We both had ravioli which was delicious!

After a very busy day, we went back to the hotel and called it a night. The next day, our flight back to Dubai wasn’t until the evening so we still had a few hours. We went for a drive and ended up at Memorial City Mall. I went to this mall last time and I absolutely love it. It is small but has everything you need. We both bought a couple of bits and then had Chick-fil-A for lunch. We dropped the rental car back and then had a couple of hours rest before the flight back.
As we were checking out of the hotel, we were told by the Captain that instead of flying directly back to Dubai as scheduled, we were now going to be flying to Dallas to load the plane with water. Due to the water leak in Houston, our aircraft had no water so we was unable to fly back to Dubai. Because of this, we had to fly to Dallas, stay on ground for a couple of hours while all the water was loaded, and then fly back to Dubai from there. It was very exhausting and added quite a few hours onto what was already a very long flight.
Despite this, we had the most amazing time in Houston and it was so nice to spend it together. We got to see loads more of the city and as always, made lots of great new memories.
Thanks for reading.

Hi Kerry. Keep posting, I love your blogs, even more so now as I am permanently working from home and its great to see other places through your eyes, if not my own at the present time. A tough time for us all in aviation (and many other industries) ..and we a look forward to normality. Take care and be safe.

Kerry,
I’m glad you had a good time in Houston, despite the water issues. Here in Houston we’ve had a lot of fun joking that not only do we flood regularly when it rains, but we can also flood on a beautiful day. Did you see the news reports of people being rescued from the roofs of their cars due to water main break?
I just missed being on your flight back to Dubai. I was on the flight the day after yours, going to see my niece who graduated that week. I’m really glad to I got to visit Dubai before the shutdown.
Thanks for keeping up with your blog. I enjoy reading it.
