My first flight after my annual leave was to Cape Town and I was very lucky to bring along my mum on the layover with me! We flew out to Dubai from London together, had some time in Dubai, and then she came on my operating flight to Cape Town. I was so excited and I think she was too as she has always wanted to visit Cape Town.

It was definitely the best flight ever having her as a passenger, those 9 hours went so quickly. She also took some of the best photos from the window as we were touching down in Cape Town…

We had lots planned for the layover, so as soon as we reached the hotel, we changed and then got an Uber to Table Mountain as we wanted to catch the cable car and go up to the top for sunset.

There was a bit of a queue but we eventually made it up to the top of Table Mountain around 6:30pm so we had around an hour before the sun went down. It was absolutely beautiful up there. The views were just incredible! It is definitely the BEST sunset I have ever seen – absolutely no filters or editing is needed!

The sun completely set around 7:30pm so as it started to get dark, we made our way over to the cable car to go back down. There was a massive queue to get back down so we waited around an hour, but the views just got even better as it got darker.

We then got an Uber to the V&A Waterfront where we had the BEST meal we have both ever had!!!! Steak, with butternut squash and chips – it was to die for.

The next morning we woke up early as we had booked a full day tour and was getting picked up at 7am. Our driver called Arshad was lovely and took us to so many different spots. We started off at the Penguin Colony at Boulders Beach.

It was absolutely fascinating seeing all the penguins walking about by the beach. We were the only people there and the weather was amazing! We also came across lots of these furry animals that looked like large rats which we later found out were called ‘Dassies’ – very similar to ‘Quokkas’ which I discovered when I was in Perth.

Our driver then took us to a smaller, more private beach where we could get up close and personal with the penguins – although what he didn’t tell us was that we had to climb over and crawl through huge boulders to get there!! It was definitely unexpected but it was so worth it.

We then drove to Chapman’s Peak followed by Seal Harbour where we had a look in some of the market stalls. The views throughout the day were just amazing. Every corner we turned became more beautiful.

We drove past Camps Bay and then up to Signal Hill where we watched lots of paragliders set off – what an amazing place to paraglide!

Our last stop of the tour was the colourful houses, also known as Bo-Kaap. Bo-Kaap is a small neighbourhood where every house is painted a different colour and has now become a popular tourist attraction.

We had a couple of hours left after the tour finished so we decided to go back to the V&A Waterfront and have some lunch. Our meal the night before was so amazing, we went back to the same restaurant and ordered exactly the same thing!!

We walked around the waterfront again and had a look in some of the tourist shops at souvenirs. We then got ourselves an ice cream and watched the street performers before it was time to get the shuttle bus back to the hotel. Luckily, when we got back to the hotel, we found out the flight back to Dubai had been delayed by an hour so we managed to rest and have a little nap before.
This was by far, the best layover yet! Being able to bring my Mum along with me was the best thing ever, and I’m so glad we got to experience Cape Town together and make so many great memories. I really wish she could come with me on every trip!
Thanks for reading.

Words cannot say how grateful I am to you for asking me to experience such an amazing adventure with you. From start to finish you made me feel so special (as well as the captain and crew of course lol)
Cape Town has been on my bucket list for many, many years and to have you by my side laughing, acting ridiculous, meeting new people and sharing breathtaking views and sights has to be my ultimate dream come true. Thank you so much for the invite and please please please don’t hesitate to ask you’re Mum on any more far flung trips that don’t require a visa 🤣🤣🤣🤣
